Marthas Vineyard Schools Kick Off Fall Sports Season with Mixed Results
MVRHS’s football squad took the field Friday night for a home opener against Mashpee High School, but the Wildcats fell 38‑12. The loss masked a number of standout moments: defensive end‑wide receiver Griffin Buehler hauled in more than 100 yards, including a 56‑yard touchdown that saw him bulldoze defenders to the end zone, while also recording a sack and multiple tackles on the other side of the ball. Sophomore quarterback Adam Parchment added a 70‑yard rushing touchdown and rushed for over 100 yards. On defense, Charles Sebastian intercepted a pass and recovered a goal‑line fumble, and Ian Nunes forced a turnover with a hard hit.
After the Friday loss, MVRHS will travel to face Sharon and North Worcester before returning home to play the Monomoy/Saint John Paul II co‑op team on Friday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
The girls’ soccer squad delivered a stronger start. After a 4‑0 victory over Harwich in the season’s opening match, the team returned home to a 4‑0 win against Monomoy. Helena Gonçalves scored twice, while teammates Josey Johns and Isabella Larsen each netted their first varsity goals. Coach Matt Malowski praised the defense for its diligence and dedication in front of the goalkeeper.
The Vineyarders will open their home slate against Nantucket on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m.
Boys’ soccer also began on a positive note. The team opened with a 4‑3 road win over Lowell Collegiate Charter and followed that with a 3‑1 home victory against Monomoy. The first goal came from a corner kick, and a 10‑minute‑later perfect placement by Moses Thomson set up a Bryan Marcal breakaway for the equalizer. Marcal then delivered a through ball to Lucca Rosa for the lead, and a later assist from Miguel Mantesso helped Victor Da Silva score the third goal.
Coach Rodrigo Honorato praised the team’s performance, saying it was another strong showing.
Field hockey has scheduled a home game against Nantucket on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. The girls split their first two road games: a 4‑0 shutout win over Wareham on Tuesday and a 2‑0 loss to Whitman‑Hansen on Thursday.
Cross country’s 19th annual Vineyard Invitational drew 23 teams to the island. The Vineyard boys finished sixth overall. Individual highlights included Nevah Fitzgerald’s 5‑K track time of 21:29.2, placing 16th among varsity girls; Ben Fuller’s 17:49.2 in the varsity boys race, placing 18th; and Mason Burns’ 19:32.4 in the junior varsity boys race, placing fifth.
The golf team started the season strongly, defeating Nauset and Barnstable. The first win came at the Captains Golf Course in Brewster, with a 245‑258 score against the Warriors. The second victory was on home turf at Farm Neck, beating the Red Hawks 238‑258. The team will host Cardinal Spellman at Farm Neck on Monday.
Overall, the opening week showcased promising individual performances and team challenges. MVRHS football will look to rebound against its next opponents, while the soccer teams—both boys and girls—continue to build momentum. Field hockey and cross country have already set the stage for a competitive season, and golf’s early victories suggest a strong start for the island’s men’s program.
Looking ahead, the Vineyarders have a full slate of games that will test their resilience and depth. The football team’s upcoming matchups against Sharon, North Worcester, and the Monomoy co‑op team will be critical for establishing early standings. Soccer teams will face Nantucket and other regional rivals, with the boys’ squad already showing offensive capability. Field hockey and cross country will continue to compete in state‑wide events, and golf will aim to maintain its winning streak against Cardinal Spellman.
The season’s trajectory will depend on how the teams adjust to early setbacks and capitalize on the strong individual performances highlighted this week.
